Arizona State University presents the world premiere of the English-language version of Eva Luna, a play based on the novel by Isabel Allende. Adapted by award-wining playwright Caridad Svich the production is directed by Latine theatre professor Micha Espinosa, featuring choreography by Julia Chacón.

Eva Luna is the story of an orphaned girl, growing up in mid-twentieth century Latin America. Eva, the titular character, is a storyteller, who survives her troubled circumstances through fantasy and storytelling. Eva’s story is paralleled by that of her soulmate, Rolf, a young journalist who escapes Austria during World War II, taking refuge in “La Colonia,” a village based on the German-inspired town, Colonia Tovar, in Venezuela. Throughout the play, the spheres of Eva and Rolf overlap, nearly coinciding, but never to meet, until they have both matured and their stories can become one.

The play features a chorus of dancers and actors who enliven the storytelling through movement and embodied character. Their work is supported by a collage of imagery and sound as the stage around them transforms through media designs by Doster Chastain, lighting designs by Shane Waltz, and sound design by the acclaimed John Zalewski, joined by an extensive team of other designers.
