Little Big Minds Dance

Flamenco is a dance and song originating in the south of Spain. It is a vibrant, expressive, evolving art form with deep roots that reach across the diverse cultures and peoples who influenced and occupied the region of Andalusia, such as Spanish, Roma, Moorish, Arabic, Judaic, Catholic, African, and American traditions, which were introduced through centuries of trans-Atlantic exchange. A percussive dance, flamenco is exuberant, dynamic, and rhythmically complex, incorporating footwork, palmas, floreos, arm positions, and movement patterns.

Ballet originated in Italy and traveled to France in 1533, when Catherine de Medici brought an Italian flair for dance to the French court when she married King Henry II. In the second half of the 16th century ballet flourished under King Louis XIV. The dance was so beautiful that it inspired Peter the Great to bring French ballet masters to teach in Russia in the early 18th century. Now Russia is well known for their wonderful ballet schools. Ballet stresses elongated and sustained movements punctuated with leaps, jumps, and turns. It is danced in slippers, incorporating codified movement vocabulary based on classical foot and arm positions.
