Arizona State University Professor Karen J. Martinson and I co-authored a piece in the November 2024 special issue of Theatre Survey, the journal of the American Society for Theatre Research. The issue, edited by Telory Arendell, focused on Movement Theatre, and our article analyzed Órale, a community-based performance created by David Herrera Performance Company and El Vez (the Mexican Elvis), performed at San Francisco’s Z-Space theatre September 7-9 2023. We examine how this cross-cultural collaboration worked, what it meant for national collaboration, Latinx performance, and the ways it opened space for community dialogue. This was my first peer-reviewed article, and I am so grateful to Professor Martinson for sharing this journey with me.
