Julia Chacón Flamenco Theatre, 2025

“BRAIDED ROOTS” at Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts

2025 marks our 10th year of programming and partnership with Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. For seven years we have performed our eight-show series Flamenco Íntimo, and for three years prior, we rocked the house in the Live & Local series. For our 2015-2025 Anniversary Celebration Julia Chacon Flamenco Theatre returns to the Virginia G. Piper main stage to present “Braided Roots,” our newest evening-length work on October 18, 2025.

In Braided Roots, elegance meets percussive power. The performance ignites the stage with textured dance that caresses the air and drives into the earth with percussive footwork that blurs the line between rhythm and rebellion. Vocals span the emotional spectrum while masterful guitar creates an equally intricate and expressive soundscape.

Braided Roots showcases flamenco in full force. Sweeping ensemble works and vivid costumes draw on flamenco’s theatrical lineage, while solos embody the raw, intimate improvisation that sparks between singer, dancer, and guitarist. The title speaks to the tangled beauty of tradition and transformation—Chacón’s path as an American artist, flamenco’s cross-cultural inheritance, and the living dialogue between lands, bodies, and histories.

Braided Roots honors nearly a century of Spanish dance in the Phoenix Valley 2025 and marks a decade of partnership between Julia Chacón Flamenco Theatre and Scottsdale Center for the Performing Arts. Drawing from flamenco’s syncretic roots and contemporary evolution, Braided Roots explores hybridity, cultural memory, and what it means to practice flamenco as an American artist shaped by the entanglements of empire and migration.

Braided Roots is supported by Scottsdale Arts, Phoenix World Arts Collective, and Fractured Atlas.
