The Artist Residency Program at MIM brings professional musicians to provide unique educational opportunities for elementary, middle-, and high-school groups. The two-hour experience includes an interactive theater performance and semi-guided museum tour. On August, 2019, Julia Chacón’s Flamenco Theatre will perform a lecture demonstration explaining the roots of flamenco, how it manifests in Spanish culture and how flamenco spread across the globe, both influencing and being influenced by music throughout Latin America and beyond.
Chacon’s relationship with the MIM started in January of 2019 when Flamenco Theatre performed for the MIM’s Experience Spain series. Chacon served on the advisory committee for the event. After seeing the community spirit that flamenco can bring she was asked to participate to share flamenco with children throughout the Phoenix Valley. Arts education is a mission for Chacon, who toured with Flamenco Vivo to rural communities throughout North Carolina for six years, sharing professional performances and classes with thousands of children.
