“de Poesia y Duende: A Tribute in Dance to the Soul of Federico Garcia Lorca

Julia Chacon is currently working with PWAC to craft the dramaturgical context for the upcoming production “de Poesia y Duende: A Tribute in Dance to the Soul of Federico Garcia Lorca,” a performance in conjunction with local theater group Teatro Meshico and Santa Fe based flamenco company, Emi Arte to be held at Arizona Latino Arts and Culture (ALAC) on September 6, 2025 at 8pm. Lorca (1898-1936) had a lifelong interest in and love of flamenco, particularly in cante jondo, the deepest and oldest of flamenco song forms. In 1922 when Lorca was 24 years old, he helped to organize and produce the first Concurso de Cante Jondo in Granada. He delivered the famous “Play and Theory of the Duende” in Buenos Aires in 1933, revised from a much earlier lecture he gave in support of the 1922 Concurso. In 1931 he recorded an album with “La Argentinita,” Encarnación López Júlvez (1898-1945), sister of the renowned Pilar López (1912-2008), who continued their dance company for decades after her sister’s death, and deeply influenced flamenco as we know it today. From his birth in a small town outside of Granada to his death, the renowned artist was deeply influenced by flamenco.
